“Star Struck”
We live in a culture captivated by Hollywood ideals – the lifestyles of the rich and famous. In a culture of material abundance, how can teens begin to embrace the true abundant life that Jesus offers? Are we “star struck” by the bright lights of the Hollywood scene or by the Light of the world? Come and be a part of Uniidiversity: July 6-11, 2009 at Longwood University in Farmville, VA.

Proclaimer and Musician
This year's proclaimer (read: "preacher") will be Erin Spengeman from Richmond, Virginia and our musician is John Callaway, who is returning to Unidiversity for a third year.

Erin currently lives in Richmond, where she is a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, a manager at a quirky, local coffee shop, and a facilitator for a neighborhood theology discussion group that meets in her home. Erin really loves sour neon gummi worms, Bruce Springsteen, Wilco, birds, preaching, and laughing.

John has quickly become a Unidiversity favorite. After graduating from Clemson, he now teaches middle school in the Charleston area and plays as many weekend gigs as possible. He will be touring this spring and summer and is currently working on a new album. Check him out at www.johncallawayband.com.

“Unidiversity: Premier”
This special track for sixth graders premieres in 2009. A sort-of freshman orientation, “Premier” will focus on the transition into the Unidiversity experience and into the teenager years in general. All sixth graders are invited, but not required, to participate.

“Unidiversity: All Access”

This special track for juniors and seniors offers opportunities to go deeper in discipleship, fellowship, and leadership. Participants will have opportunities for off-site events, junior/senior seminars, and special worship leadership. All students that have completed 11th or 12th grade are invited, but not required, to participate.

Bible Studies, Seminars, and Electives

Each church group is expected to provide leaders for Bible studies, seminars and electives. We will need 20 or more adult leaders for Bible studies, 20 or more adult leaders for seminars, and 20 or more adult leaders for electives.
  • Bible study groups meet daily. The curriculum is written by David Woody and provided in advance of camp. All supplies needed for Bible study activities will be provided on the first night of camp.
  • Seminars focus on issues, topics, and experiences as they relate to discipleship and the week’s theme. These topic-based discussion groups that meet for two 1-hour periods and are typically offered twice – once in the first semester (Tues/Wed) and once in the second semester (Thurs/Fri). A list of potential seminars will be available from Scott Thrailkill, but the seminars
    depend on leaders’ creativity.
  • Electives are sport- or hobby-based groups that meet on three days (Tues/Wed/Fri) for an hour and a half each day. Michael Kellett can provide a list of past elective offerings and suggestions for new electives.

Personal Devotion Time – New in 2009!

This year, the camp schedule will program in personal devotion time. Immediately following Morning Celebration each day, teenagers will be invited to take a few minutes to reflect on the daily theme. Instructions will be given as teenagers leave Morning Celebration.

Organized Activities during Free Time

A number of different activities will be available for students during free time. The pool will be open. The student union will have bowling, ping pong and pool available for a minimal cost. And a number of “organized” free time activities will be available. More details on these activities – like soccer games, ping pong tournaments, or disc golf – will be available as we get closer to the summer.

2009 Unid T-Shirts

Each participant will receive a themed t-shirt at the end of the week. Please begin collecting information regarding t-shirt sizes for all of your group’s participants.

Chaperone Requirements

Longwood University requires a minimum ratio of one chaperone to every ten teenagers. In order to make camp run smoothly, more chaperones are needed. Since youth ministers and other chaperones provide all of the programming for Unidiversity, chaperones will have a variety of duties during the week. Particularly pay attention to the need for Bible study, seminar, and elective leaders as you recruit chaperones.
